I grew up over there and have met a couple of people here in the Augusta area that had no idea of what hard working people our people were. I have no idea where they got their information from and I told them exactly what I read in so many of the post here. The "Valley People" were hard workers and we didn't know we were poor. I went to Langley Grammar School and on to LBC and graduated in the late 60s. I live in Harlem now, another small town on the other side of the river and I love it too. Thank you so much for all the memories you brought back and all the wonderful memories you have of our Horse Creek Valley and as so many said, "It started in Gloverville and ended in Clearwater. I remember well The Graniteville Rocks being our rival. Couldn't believe it when I learned that LBC and Graniteville had been combined to become Midland Valley Mustangs. OUCH! Here is an example of use from the CLEARWATER, South Carolina Community Brief - Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance Panel:

"The community was once home to two major textile mills: Clearwater Finishing Plant and Seminole Mill, which were owned most recently by United Merchants, a New York-based textile company."

So I guess maybe a plant can be a type of mill. I do know that he owned it when they met, and they lived happily ever after until we lost him a few years ago. <3

I have no idea when he became the owner, I do know that he owned it and had for awhile when he and my mom met/started dating, and he owned the Dixie Lee until we moved to the coast around 1985/86.

Great memories from the Dixie Lee!! As well as a few other areas in "the valley" - I never knew that's what that area is called in spite of most of both sides of my biological family being from Augusta through Aiken/Clearwater.

Elliott, my adoptive dad is not from the area, but my biological paternal grandparents were from there: Alvin and Birdie Rodgers, from Aiken. I still have an aunt/uncle in Graniteville, they own a mobile home park there but don't know any details of the park right off-hand: they are Bruce and Sandra (Sandy) Ready.

My maternal grandparents lived in the Hephziba area of Augusta, and many of my aunts/uncles/cousins still reside in the area: my GPs were Albert and Doris Sims, my mom is Faye. My uncle Mike broke wild horses professionally at one (some?) of the horse arenas, possibly in N. Augusta, until he retired awhile ago.

Sorry, my memory and current knowledge of much of my family is too fuzzy these days to accurately recall too much detailed information. But perhaps this is enough information for someone to notice and recognize, and possibly share some history, memories, and/or stories of these general areas, the Dixie Lee as the Dixie Lee or as any business, or especially my relatives with me?
Hey, stranger things have happened lol!! I've met someone who actually remembered my mom and her siblings from grade school - he could remember more of the siblings' names than I could - totally randomly while engaging in small talk while in line for bathrooms at a bike rally in Myrtle Beach a few years ago, it's a small world and the internet is making it even smaller!!

Much appreciation to anyone and everyone who took the time to read this!! :-)
Mellissa Xenakishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04071368792113783849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-27712225091921555092018-07-03T21:36:22.898-05:002018-07-03T21:36:22.898-05:00Wow... when was the Dixie Lee owned by the Crytzer...Wow... when was the Dixie Lee owned by the Crytzers? My dad owned the Dixie Lee when my mom met him... maybe '82, '83? Elliott Porter was his name. I practically grew up in the Dixie Lee :-) I learned to swim in the pool out back. Before the warehouse space behind the bar burned (I slept through all the sirens and excitement that night) it was my 'playhouse' - I had the coolest playhouses as a child! In the house behind the Dixie Lee I practiced my superhero flying skills with a towel tied around my neck by climbing out the upper floor window onto the carport roof and jumping off.

I gave my parents many gray hairs as a child lol!

But seriously, the last time I went by there (10-15yrs ago now) it was a Chinese restaurant, I think?
We moved to the coastal area when I was 6, 1986/87, but my earliest and some of my best childhood memories are centered around the Dixie Lee and the house on the property <3

Thank you for the walk down memory lane; I needed that tonight :-)Mellissa Xenakishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04071368792113783849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-80410956596363752192018-06-07T20:07:32.690-05:002018-06-07T20:07:32.690-05:00I've lived here my whole life and I remember o...I've lived here my whole life and I remember our address used to be (Rt 1 box 95 DW)Anonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13213784694103253425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-62221058179664309382017-05-20T21:50:18.859-05:002017-05-20T21:50:18.859-05:00l lived in Dixie Clay Co. house. My best friend lived a few doors down the street and her brother became my husband(almost 50 years later, he still is).We lived in a mill house and like everybody else, we didn't know we were poor.Nobody worried about locking their doors. Children played all over the neighborhood without fear because somebody's mama was always watching out for the youngins. Valley people are a special breed: tough, kind-hearted, hard-working, God-loving, and proud. Recently, L.B.C. Middle School presented an original play about The Valley "Carry It Forward". It was wonderful! Plans are in the works for it to become a documentary. I just discovered this site. I have spent hours reading and remembering--what fun! Keep up the great work.suggahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01610092549627091879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-36649072340846974702015-11-18T17:35:59.903-06:002015-11-18T17:35:59.903-06:00Those are some great recollections, jeff reames.
