Yes, the large, white building is the Joe Bono saloon. (Building had other uses over the years.) Bono's son lives in the RV (or mobile home, I forget) close to the jail.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-35490819184544954692017-01-11T21:29:48.998-06:002017-01-11T21:29:48.998-06:00Thanks for the tip, Anonymous! Is that the Bono Saloon I've got pictured off High Lonesome Rd? If so, that's great info! I'd love to see it reopened.

By the way, the coordinates you sent seem to put me in Steamboat, AZ, north of I-40. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks again! It's at N 35.74207 W 109.83194. The Bono saloon (large white building) was half in ruin in 1969. Bono's son hopes to reopen it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-47660976599710932272016-12-31T16:51:29.881-06:002016-12-31T16:51:29.881-06:00Anonymous, that's very cool that you were able...Anonymous, that's very cool that you were able to see the Gleeson school with arch intact. I wish I'd been so lucky!

As for the fish pond behind the Musso house, I wish I'd been so lucky as to see that, too! Sadly, I didn't find the house. So, all I can offer is what Philip Varney said in "Arizona's Best Ghost Towns: A Practical Guide": "The best story told about the Mussos is that during Prohibition they were supposed to have hidden their liquor supply in an excavation under a fishpond. And, indeed, in the backyard is what looks very much like a fishpond with a vault underneath." Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. Probably better, actually!

Thanks very much for your comment! Was the "L" shaped in-the-ground structure behind the Musso house the fish pond? Maybe that's why Homeland Security gave me a wry smile as I set off down the Ghost Town Trail from Pearce.

As always, many thanks for your comment! There were many pockets of resistance that held out as late as the 1920s, especially in the southwest. It wasn't so much a place or time, but an attitude (or lack of one). Volumes have been written about the golden age of the wild west, but in these latter day ghost towns, we can see ample traces of the things that made the west wild.CoastConFanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07250561260148656254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-11322840486829163212014-04-20T22:08:43.638-05:002014-04-20T22:08:43.638-05:00Thanks, Atsf Roswell!
