In about 2011, my mother, 2 uncles, and I drove to Duran from my Uncle's house (Joe Trujillo) in Chimayo. While there, we were taking pictures of the church when an old-timer slowly drove by in an old truck with his dog. Later, while at the cemetery, he drove by again and stopped to talk. He was one of the Bindis (Brahaim?) and said he remembered my grandma. He had also heard of Joe from Chimayo. They talked for about two hours before we said our goodbyes and headed back north. Before we left, we drove through town. I called my grandma and asked her what her address was. She replied, "Mijo, we didn't have addresses. The mailman knew us all and where we lived!" It was a very enjoyable day.Eric Martineznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-22481959992816552392022-04-02T00:21:15.362-05:002022-04-02T00:21:15.362-05:00My grandfather, Roy Grissom owned the Conoco stati...My grandfather, Roy Grissom owned the Conoco station in Duran until he and my grandmother May Grissom moved to California in the late 50's. The Conoco pump was at the Duran Garage, next door to the Coury's Hotel. As a small child in the 40's I recall a prior pump with a long handle that you worked back and forth to fill a graduated glass container at the top of the pump. This container was then drained into the car's tank. For a while my grandmother also had the Hwy 54 Cafe, across the highway and north of Bill Hindi's building.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13395874350080281232noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7921005.post-12448388988314051732021-08-05T10:10:44.347-05:002021-08-05T10:10:44.347-05:00I'm glad I stumbled upon this blog post. I got to know the family well on my many trips to Duran and their ranch and on the Pony Express Ride competitions that I attended with Anna. The Hindi's almost always won the horse races. Most everyone ran quarter horses, while the Hindi's ran their Arabians. For long races the quarter horse is no match for an Arabian!
